Shreekanth V. Karwande, MD
Dr. Karwande completed his surgical internship and residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago and The State University of New York. Following residency, he trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Cornell University.
Dr. Karwande was Board Certified in General Surgery in 1983 and in Thoracic Surgery in 1993 and recertified in 2004. He also received his certificate for Surgical Critical Care in 1989. For the past ten years, he has served as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Utah with tenure as a full Professor. He was instrumental in the development of the UTAH Heart and Lung Transplant programs and served as the director during his tenure at the University of Utah. He has served as the residency training program director at the University of Utah and been personally responsible for training more than 30 cardiothoracic surgeons during his tenure.
He has extensive administrative experience and belongs to many professional societies including; The American College of Surgeons, The Society of Critical Care, The College of Chest Physicians, The Western Thoracic Surgical Association, The American Heart Association, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons. He has more that 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals with topics spanning the entire scope of cardiothoracic surgery.
Dr. Karwande has surgical expertise in coronary bypass surgery, valve replacement and repair, lung cancer surgery, heart and lung transplantation, artificial heart devises and the surgical treatment of hyperhydrosis (sweating).
Dr. Karwande is an active surgeon who loves the outdoors. He enjoys football, hiking, snowboarding and mountaineering. He is a member of the University of Utah Crimson Club and loves the Buffalo Bills. He has climbed many peaks including Kilimanjaro in Africa and Cotopaxi and Orizaba in South America.
